COMING CHRISTIAN TYRANNY
"I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ"
REVELATION 13: TWO BEASTS - ONE RELIGION, PROFESSED CHRISTIANITY THE MOST POWERFUL COALITION IN THE WORLD
MANY see Islamic extremism as the greatest threat to the Western world and religious liberty but Bible prophecy reveals a more sinister and dangerous foe in that the final religio-political oppressor, shocking as this will be to many, will be clothed in the garb of professed Christianity, symbolised by the two beasts of Revelation chapter 13: the Beast with seven heads & ten horns and the beast with two lamb-like horns. Progressively oppressive laws impacting on freedom of speech and religious liberty will gradually find their way into the governments of nations and the immovable rock of God's faithful will finally come up against the seemingly irresistible force of religious oppression and bigotry.
The prophecy has already predicted the outcome for these two beasts and for the people of God engaged in the final crisis when the laws of the land come in direct conflict with the law of God.
The type was played out on the Plains of Dura in Daniel chapter 3. The antitype will see the culmination of thousands of years of disobedience and rebellion against the God of heaven in the passage of a religious law, the Mark of the Beast, and the deliverance of God's faithful people from the hands of the oppressor.
As those who obey the Beast and his image will receive its Mark and be forever lost, it is important that we identify the Beast and his image so that we can identify and avoid the MARK.
The prophecy in Revelation chapter 13 is written using symbols, which can only be correctly decoded by other Bible verses. The books of Daniel & Revelation are like a hand in glove and must be studied together in order to understand Bible prophecy. Revelation expands on what is in Daniel.
REVELATION 13
13:1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea, and saw a beast rise up out of the sea, having seven heads and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns, and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
13:2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion: and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
13:3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death; and his deadly wound was healed: and all the world wondered after the beast.
13:4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who [is] like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?
13:5 And there was given unto him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies; and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months.
13:6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.
13:7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
13:8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
13:9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
13:10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
13:11 And I beheld another beast coming up out of the earth; and he had two horns like a lamb, and he spake as a dragon.
13:12 And he exerciseth all the power of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast, whose deadly wound was healed.
13:13 And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men,
13:14 And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by [the means of] those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
13:15 And he had power to give life unto the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak, and cause that as many as would not worship the image of the beast should be killed.
13:16 And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads:
13:17 And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
13:18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.

SEVEN HEADS IS SEVEN BEASTS IS SEVEN KINGDOMS OF BIBLE PROPHECY
The first beast of Revelation 13:1-10 is a composite beast
It is made up of parts of the four beasts of Daniel 7.
It has the mouth of a lion
It has the body of a leopard,
It has the feet of a bear
It has ten horns of the fourth beast of Daniel 7.
It is described as having seven heads and tens horns for a good reason. Each head on a body would suggest that there are seven different beasts in all (see Revelation 17 study) in the books of Daniel & Revelation representing seven different powers, nations, kingdoms. This is exactly what we find.
There are four beasts in the book of Daniel - the lion, bear, leopard and the "terrible" fourth beast.
There are three beasts in Revelation, the beast from the bottomless pit of Revelation 11, the first beast of Revelation 13:1-10 and the beast with lamb-like horns of Rev 13:11-18.
THE SEVEN BEASTS OF DANIEL & REVELATION
DANIEL
1. Lion - Babylon
2. Bear - Medo-Persia
3. Leopard - Grecia
4. "Terrible Beast" - Rome
(Note: Beasts are symbolic of Kingdoms, power & nations. The Ram and He-goat of Daniel 8 represent the same powers as the Bear & Leopard)
REVELATION
5. Beast with seven heads & ten horns of Rev 13:1-10 - Papal Rome
6. Beast from the Bottomless Pit (Rev 11) - see study of Rev 11&17
7. Beast with two lamb-like horns (Rev 13:11-18) - see study of Rev 13
The first beast of Revelation 13:1-10 with seven heads and ten horns is virtually a mirror of the red Dragon beast of Revelation 12 which also has seven heads and ten horns with ten crowns on those horns. The dragon gives this first beast its power, seat and great authority.
The two horned beast of Rev 13:11-18 also speaks as a dragon. Hence these beasts are actuated by and under the control of the dragon of Revelation 12. The dragon is identified in Rev 12:9 as "... that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him."
What a masterclass of deception (Rev 12:9) the devil has perpetrated on the human race - the religion that is supposed to save the world (John 3:16) he cunningly uses to bring about its destruction. Jesus said this about the Jewish nation and the devil in John 8:44 "Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it."
The devil is a deceiver or liar and a murderer. He uses individuals and powers or nations under his control to achieve his purposes and this is displayed ever so keenly in Revelation chapter 13. - deception in the form of miracles & murder in the form of a death decree.
OVERVIEW
Many Christians today think that the beast represents a man whom they expect to come to power in the future and persecute Christians for 3 1/2 literal years. Few realize that this view was actually invented by the Roman Catholic Jesuit, Francisco Ribera (1537-1591) in an effort to counter the almost unanimous Protestant interpretation that the beast symbolizes the Roman Papacy - PAPAL ROME.
“Ribera thrust the Antichrist into the future, confined to 3 1/2 literal years; Alcazar pushed Antichrist back into the early centuries - Both of them outside the Middle Ages and the Reformation period, designated by all Protestants for Antichrist’s reign of 1260 literal YEARS.” L. Froom, Prophetic Faith of Our Fathers, Vol. II, p508.
“The Futuristic School, FOUNDED by the Jesuit Ribera in 1591, looks for Antichrist, Babylon, and a rebuilt temple in Jerusalem, at the end of the Christian Dispensation.” G.S. Hitchcock, (Roman Catholic), The Beast and the Little Horn, p7.
Ribera’ counter Reformation theory, though rejected by Protestants in his day, reappeared and developed in the works of various 19th century commentators. No longer does Roman Catholicism have to counter the ‘Protestant’ interpretation of prophecy because today virtually all ‘Protestants’ hold what is essentially the Catholic interpretation!
Revelation 13 presents the world’s MOST POWERFUL RELIGION, the Roman Papacy symbolised by the beast with 7 heads & 10 horns and the world’s MOST POWERFUL STATE, the second beast. Both are to play a major part in end-time events...
This prophecy foretells the formation of an “image” of the Roman Catholic system when the leading Protestant churches, unite upon common points of doctrine, and influence the State to enforce their doctrine. This “image of the beast,” a union of church & State just like Papal Rome, will cause all men to receive the mark of the beast - the mark of Roman Catholicism...

Daniel 7:23 "Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth,..."
We saw in Daniel 7 that the 4th beast was the 4th kingdom. First mention interpretation dictates that when Daniel speaks of the 4th kingdom in Daniel chapter 7 he is referring back to the 4th kingdom of the Daniel 2 image which was Rome. Daniel 7, however, states that out of this fourth kingdom (Rome) emerges another kingdom in the form of the little horn. This symbol which is religious in some of it's identifying points is equivalent to the feet of IRON & CLAY of Daniel 2 which we saw was the union of church & state in the form of Papal Rome. The little horn is, therefore, Papal Rome and the first beast of Revelation 13 when considering its characteristics is Papal Rome. That is, the head or beast which is being discussed in Revelation 13 is the Papal head which receives the deadly wound, wars against God's saints, speaks blasphemies against God, reigns for 1260yrs etc.
IDENTIFYING THE BEAST FROM THE SEA - REVELATION 13: 1-10
v 1 And I stood upon the sand of the sea...
No detail is without significance. The sea symbolizes the wicked, “But the WICKED [are] like the troubled SEA, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt.” Isa 57:20.
The sand of the sea shore fittingly symbolizes the church rejected of the world. To Abraham God promised, “I will multiply thy seed as...the SAND which [is] upon the sea SHORE...” Gen 22:17. John’s location on the sand shows him to be representative of the church.
Some manuscripts say, “and he [the dragon] stood...” on the sand awaiting the beast to which he would give his seat, power and authority (v 2). Standing on the sand may also be seen as oppressing God’s people which are as the sand of the sea.
v 1 ...and saw a Beast rise up...
The Bible states that a beast symbolizes a KINGDOM or nation NOT an individual man. (see Daniel 7:23; 8:21-22). The beast is made up of the powers seen in Daniel 7 where they are said to symbolize political KINGDOMS - Lion (Babylon), Bear (Medo-Persia), Leopard (Greece), Dragon (Rome) with ten horns. The beast is a kingdom made up of these earlier kingdoms. John looking back in time describes the earlier kingdoms in reverse order.
v 1 ...out of the sea...
Waters symbolize many peoples (Rev 17:15; Isa 57:20, 21). This beast (kingdom) arose from a populated area. It is made up of the beasts (kingdoms) of Daniel 7 which also arose from the sea (populated areas).
v 1 ...having seven heads...
Heads symbolize political kingdoms. The four heads of the leopards (Daniel 7) parallel the four horns of the goat in Daniel 7 which are said to represent "kingdoms." (See Dan 8:22).
The beast’s seven heads symbolize seven successive political kingdoms through which Satan has worked (See on Revelation 17).
The head that is ‘alive’ at any particular time is said to be the beast (kingdom) reigning at that time (cf. Rev 13:3 & 13:12). The head (kingdom), which this chapter focuses on, is the Papal head, the Papal State. The Papacy is a kingdom united with a church:
“Sovereignty over Vatican City is exercised by the pope in his function as supreme head of the Catholic church...The 50 or so countries maintaining permanent diplomatic relations with it implicitly recognize its sovereign status.” New Catholic Encyclopedia, p557-558.
v 1 ...and ten horns, and upon his horns ten crowns...
Like the leopard, bear, lion and dragon the ten horns are drawn from the prophecy of Daniel 7 where they are said to be “ten kings [kingdoms].” Daniel 7:24. Horns represent "kingdoms" (See Dan 8:8, 22).
v 1 ...and upon his heads the name of blasphemy.
The Bible says that blasphemy is when a man, who is not God, claims to forgive sins against God. (See Mark 2:7). When the Pope and all Catholic Priests claim to forgive sins in the confessional they thus speak blasphemies. The only confessional which heaven approves is that which goes direct to Jesus, “For [there is]...ONE MEDIATOR between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.” 1Tim 2:5.
v 2 And the beast which I saw was like unto a leopard, and his feet were as [the feet] of a bear, and his mouth as the mouth of a lion...
This KINGDOM is an amalgamation of the political KINGDOMS symbolized as beasts in Daniel 7. Conquered kingdoms were absorbed into the conquerors kingdom. The kingdoms are mentioned in reverse order as John was looking back from the time of the ROMAN Empire.
Leopard (GREECE), bear (MEDO-PERSIA), Lion (BABYLON).
v 2 ...and the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.
The dragon primarily symbolizes Satan (Rev 12: 9). Secondarily it symbolizes the Roman Empire through which Satan tried to kill Jesus at His birth depicted in Rev 12:4. cf. Matt 2:16). Herod was a Roman appointed ruler who tried to kill baby Jesus. So also was Pilate who delivered up Jesus to death. Incidentally the Roman Empire even used the red dragon as their symbol. Pagan Rome gave Papal Rome its power, seat (place of government - i.e. the city of Rome), and great authority.
v 3 And I saw one of his heads as it were wounded to death...
The wounding of the head is said to be the wounding of the beast. Compare v 3 with v 13.
In the 1790s atheism became the official policy of the French Republic as a reaction to the apostate & oppressive Christianity. of Roman Catholicism. In 1798 the French army under Napoleon abolished the Papal State which it considered an enemy of the Republic. The Pope was led into captivity where he died. As Rome had done to thousands in the Dark Ages so it was done to her.
“[General] Berthier entered Rome on 10th February 1798, and proclaimed a Republic. The aged Pontiff...was hurried from prison to prison into France. Broken with fatigue and sorrows, he died...No wonder that half Europe thought Napoleon’s veto would be obeyed, and that with the Pope THE PAPACY WAS DEAD.” Joseph Rickaby, The Modern Papacy, [lecture 24, p. 1] (London: Catholic Truth Society, 1910).
“The ultimate humiliation of the Church came when Pius VI was driven from Rome by the French armies in 1798.” Encyclopedia Britannica, 1989, Vol. 26, p938.
“The Papacy WAS EXTINCT; not a vestige of its existence remained; and among all the Roman Catholic powers not a finger was stirred in its defense. The Eternal city had neither prince nor pontiff; its bishop was dying captive in foreign lands; and the decree was already announced that no successor would be allowed in its place.” George Trevor, Rome: From the Fall of the Western Empire, p439-440.
“Multitudes imagined that the papacy was at the point of DEATH and asked, would Pius VI be the last Pontiff, and if the close of the eighteenth century would be signalized by THE FALL OF THE PAPAL DYNASTY.” T.H. Gill, The Papal Drama, Book 10.
Note: The issue is not the death of the Pope but the abolition of the Papacy. The fact that the Papacy soon began to reform is as prophecy foretold, its deadly wound will heal. Daniel 11:40 & Revelation 11 revealed that a new Satanic power was to rise at the time of the end. The atheistic State gave the Papacy a deadly wound but the prophecy foretold that the wound would heal. The two great forces that are helping to heal the wound are Protestant America (See on Rev 13:11-17) and the nations of Western Europe (see on Rev 17:8-13).
v 3 ...and his deadly wound was healed...
Soon after the humiliation of 1798 the Papacy began to re-organize. A new Pope was elected in 1801 and the restoration to power began. The Papacy suffered a new setback in 1870 when the Papal States were taken from it. In 1929 Italy helped the healing process by returning to the Papacy, the Papal States:
“A crowd, tense with excitement, is here to witness the passage of these two men [Mussolini and Cardinal Gaspari] whose pens will HEAL A WOUND of fifty nine years.” Catholic Advocate, 1929.
Headline - “HEALING THE WOUND” The San Francisco Chronicle. Feb. 12, 1929.
The healing will be complete when the Papacy once again has the power of the State to enforce its decrees and persecute any dissenters.
v 3 ...and all the world wondered after the beast.
The Pope is without doubt the most prominent religious figure in the world. The Papal power is known worldwide. All the world will wonder after the Papacy as the world’s leading religion.
v 4 And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast...
The dragon is primarily Satan (Rev 12:9). Those who KNOWINGLY obey the beast when it commands things contrary to God’s Word have made the beast their God. In this way many do worship the Papacy (many are presently unaware that they are following things contrary to the Bible) and many will worship the Papacy.
v 4 ...saying, Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him.
The Papacy “made war with the saints, and prevailed against them.”
The saints war against evil with the sword of the spirit (Eph 6:12). Tragically the Papacy slew them with the sword of the State.
v 5 And there was given him a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies...
The man of the Papacy is the “Papa” - the pope, the one Catholics call the holy father. Jesus said we should call no man our spiritual “Father.” (Matt 23:9). Blasphemy is when a man who is not God, claims to forgive sins against God. (Mark 2:7). Blasphemy is also when a deity is attributed to a man as in John 10:33 - "The Jews answered him, saying, For a good work we stone thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God."
BLASPHEMOUS STATEMENTS MADE BY PAPAL ROME
“Seek where you will, through heaven and earth, and you will find but one created being who can forgive the sinner, who can free him from the chains of hell. That extraordinary being is the priest, the (Roman) Catholic Priest. Yes, beloved brethren, the priest not only declares that the sinner is forgiven, but he really forgives him. The priest raises his hand, he pronounces the word of absolution, and in an instant, quick as a flash of light the chains of hell are burst asunder, and the sinner becomes a child of God. So great is the power of the priest that the judgments of heaven itself are subject to his decision.” – The Catholic Priest, by Fr. Michael Mueller C.SS.R., Baltimore, Maryland: 1876, Kreuzer Brothers, pp. 78, 79.
“God Himself is obliged to abide by the judgment of His priest, and either not to pardon or to pardon, according as they refuse or give absolution... The sentence of the priest precedes, and God subscribes to it.” – Dignity and Duties of the Priest, St. Alphonsus Ligouri, Vol. 12, p. 2.
“"The priest holds the place of the Saviour Himself, when, by saying, 'Ego te absolvo' [I thee absolve], he absolves from sin . . .To pardon a single sin requires all the omnipotence of God. . . . But what only God can do by His omnipotence, the priest can also do by saying 'Ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis.'. . . Innocent III has written: 'Indeed, it is not too much to say that in view of the sublimity of their offices the priests are so many gods” St. Alphonsus De Liguori, The Dignity of the Priesthood, p 33. Made a saint in 1839 by Pope Gregory XVI. Proclaimed a Doctor of the Catholic Church in 1871. One of the most widely read Catholic authors.
“...the power of the priest is the power of the divine person; for the transubstantiation of the bread requires as much power as the creation of the world....thus the priest may be called the creator of the Creator...” Ibid, p 33.
“The Pope is supreme judge of the law of the land...He is the vicegerent of Christ, and is not only a priest forever, but is King of kings and Lord of lords.” La Civilta Cattolica, March 18, 1871.
Don’t Catholic Priests forgive sins against God in the Confessional?
“QUESTION: Does the priest truly forgive the sins, or does he only declare that they are remitted?
ANSWER: The priest does really and truly forgive the sins in virtue of the power given him by Jesus Christ.”
Joseph DeHarbe, Catechism of the Catholic Religion, 1924, p. 279.
“To believe that our Lord God the Pope has not the power to decree as he has decreed, is to be deemed heretical.”
The Gloss “Extravagantes" of Pope John XXII. "Cum inter," Tit. xiv, cap. iv., ad Callem. Sexti Decretalium, Paris 1685.
v 5 ...and power was given unto him to continue forty [and] two months.
This period is expressed as: “3 1/2 times.” (Dan 7:25; 12:7; Rev 12:4). “42 months.” (Rev 11:2; 13:5). “1260 days.” (Rev 11:3; 12:6).
However the natural expression - “Three years and six months,” that is used to describe a literal period of this duration (e.g. Luke 4:25; James 5:17), is not used once. Evidently the 3 1/2 times that the beast reigned is symbolic, fitting its symbolic context, and representing a greater length of actual time that is in keeping with the context of the rise and fall of nations.
3 1/2 times = 1260 days
“And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness...for 3 1/2 times.” Rev 12:14
“And the woman fled into the wilderness... 1260 days.” Rev 12:6.
A day = a year.
“I have appointed thee each day for a year.” Ezekiel 4:6 “... each day for a year.” Numbers 14:34. Therefore the 3 1/2 times = 1260 symbolic days = 1260 literal years.
This period for the Papacy began in 538AD.
In 533 the Eastern Roman Emperor made the Pope head of all the churches: “...head of all the holy churches” and “head of all the holy priests of God." Code of Justinian, book 1, title. 1. This decree could not go into effect until the last of the anti-Catholic Arian powers were overthrown. This occurred in 538AD with the calamitous defeat that plucked up the third Arian horn - the Ostrogoths. Referring to the defeat of the Goths in 538 the historian write, “Some of them [the retreating Goths] must have suspected the melancholy truth that they had dug one grave deeper and wider than all, the grave of the Gothic monarchy in Italy.” Thomas Hodgkin, Italy and Her Invaders, book 5, chap. 9, last par. [Vol. 4, p. 285.]
As the Roman Catholic State came to full power in AD58 and reigned 1260 years, it would come to its end in 1798. 538 + 1260 years = 1798.
In that very year France, who perceived the Papacy as an enemy, abolished the Papal State.
“The ULTIMATE HUMILIATION of the Church came when Pius VI was driven from Rome by the French armies in 1798.” Encyclopaedia Britannica, 1989, Vol. 26, p938.

verse 6 And he opened his mouth in blasphemy against God, to blaspheme his name, and his tabernacle, and them that dwell in heaven.

“The Pope is of so great authority and power that he can modify, explain, or interpret even Divine laws...THE POPE CAN MODIFY DIVINE LAW, since his power is not of man, but of God, and he acts in the place of God upon earth.” Lucius Ferraris, “Papa,” art. 2, in Prompta Bibliotheca.
“The pope has power to change times, to abrogate [change] laws, and to dispense [do away] with all things, even the precepts of Christ.” Decretal, De Translantic Episcop.
BLASPHEMES GOD'S NAME
The Papacy blasphemes His name by misrepresenting God’s character. Name stands for character (Ecc 7:1).
Blasphemes God’s Tabernacle (temple).
The Papacy blasphemes God’s tabernacle by setting up an earthly priesthood and a human system of mediation in place of Christ, our only Mediator (1Tim 2:5) and His ministry in the heavenly tabernacle.
BLASPHEMES THEM THAT DWELL (TABERNACLE) IN HEAVEN
The Papacy blasphemes (speaks reproachfully) God’s people who dwell by faith in heaven.CVPeople can be blasphemed. The Greek word Blasphemo may mean “to speak reproachfully of.” e.g. “Being defamed [slandered; blaspheme in Greek], we intreat: we are made as the filth of the world, and are the offscouring [“scum” NIV] of all things unto this day.” 1Cor 4:13.
TRUE CHRISTIANS dwell in heavenly places.
PAPAL ROME BLASPHEMES THEM THAT DWELL IN HEAVEN BY CLAIMING TO BE GREATER THAN EVEN THE ANGELS
“Indeed, the excellence and power of the Roman Pontiff is not only in the sphere of heavenly things, and earthly things, and those of the lower regions, but even ABOVE THE ANGELS, than whom he himself is greater.” Lucius Ferraris, “Papa II” Prompta Bibliotheca, Vol. VI, p27. verse 7 And it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them: and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.
In the past the Papacy had countless Christians martyred in the Inquisition etc. for believing doctrines which the Catholic Church called heresy. See on Daniel 7. The healing of the deadly wound will result in another terrible persecution of those who keep the commandments of God rather than the commandments of the Papacy.
Pagan Rome killed an estimated three million Christians, while historians estimate that the Papacy has killed no less than 50 million! This Great Tribulation covered the period called the Dark Ages (See on Matt 24:21-22). Augustine laid the foundation for the church to persecute heretics when he wrote:
“Originally my opinion was that no one should be coerced into the unity of Christ, that we must act only by words, fight only by arguments, and prevail by force of reason, lest we should have those whom we knew as avowed heretics feigning themselves to be Catholics. But this opinion of mine was overcome...” St. Augustine, Letter 93 (to Vincentius), chap. 5, sec. 17, trans. in Nicene and Post-Nicene Fathers, first series, Vol. I, p388.
“The Catholic church has persecuted...We have always defended the persecution of the Hugenots, and the Spanish Inquisition...When she thinks it good to use physical force, she will use it.” A Roman Catholic publication, The Western Watchman, of St Louis, Dec. 24, 1908.
“Torture was little used from the 9th to 12th centuries, but with the revival of Roman law the process was re-established in the 12th century...In 1252 [Pope] Innocent IV sanctioned the infliction of torture by the civil authorities upon heretics, and torture came to have a recognized place in the procedures of the inquisitorial courts.” New Catholic Encyclopaedia, art. Torture.
“The civil authorities, therefore, were enjoined by the popes, under pain of excommunication to execute the legal sentences that condemned impenitent heretics to the stake.” Joseph Blotzer, article, ‘Inquisition’, Catholic Encyclopaedia, Vol. VIII, p34.
“Cursed be they who assert liberty of conscience and of worship, and such as maintain the church should not employ force. The State has not the right to leave every man free to embrace whatever religion he shall deem true.” Pope Pius IX’s Encyclical and Syllabus (Dec. 8, 1864).
verse 8 And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him, whose names are not written in the book of life of the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world.
All the world knows this power. “Catholic” actually means “universal.” This verse foretells a worldwide religious movement. The last issue will be over worship.
verse 9 If any man have an ear, let him hear.
Those who are willing to do Christ’s will and accept truth (John 7:17) even if it cuts across cherished practices or ideas, will understand.
verse 10 He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity...
As the Papacy had led people into captivity so it was led into captivity. In 1798 the Pope, the head of the Papacy, was taken captive by the armies of France.
“The ULTIMATE HUMILIATION of the Church came when Pius VI was driven from Rome by the French armies in 1798.” Enc’ Britannica, 1989, Vol. 26, p938.
“In 1798 he [Berthier]...made his entrance into Rome, ABOLISHED the PAPAL GOVERNMENT and established a secular one.” The Enc’ Americana, 1941 ed.
verse 10 ...he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints.
The sword can refer to God’s word, “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” Eph 6:17. The sword can also symbolize the power of the State (Rom 13:3-4). As the beast had killed Christians with the SWORD OF THE STATE, so it was killed by the SWORD OF THE STATE. In 1798 the French State abolished the Papacy. See on v 3.
The church wields the sword of the Spirit - the Word of God. The church must not use the sword of the State to further its ends. Persecuting and threatening people into the truth only makes hypocrites not Christians. Jesus said, “Put up again thy sword into his place: for all they that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” Matt 26:52.
verse 18 Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding...
WISDOM and UNDERSTANDING is found in keeping God’s statues and judgments (Deut 4:5-6).
Those who keep God’s judgments and statutes will understand.
verse 18 ...count the number of the beast: for it is the number of a man; and his number [is] Six hundred threescore [and] six.
The Greek is six hundred and sixty six, not simply three sixes. The number of the beast is the number of a specific "man.”
The word “man “ is from the Greek anthropos, which is translated “man” 552 times out of 559 occurrences, in the KJV Bible.
Daniel 2 described the image OF A MAN.
Daniel 7 spoke of the little horn (parallels the beast), having the eyes OF A MAN.
Revelation 13 speaks of the number OF A MAN.
Paul spoke of the MAN of sin (2Thess 2).
As this man’s number is another clue to help us identify this power, a specific man with a specific number must be intended. As we have identified the beast as the Roman Papacy the man is easily identified. The man of the Papacy is the one Catholics call the “papa” or Pope.
The Roman Catholic paper, Our Sunday Visitor stated:
“The title of the Pope of Rome is Vicarius Filii Dei. This is inscribed on his mitre; and if you take the letters of his title which represent Latin numerals (printed large) and add them together they come to 666.”
“Answers to Reader’s Questions,,” Our Sunday Visitor [Catholic], Nov 15, 1914.
Note: Vicarius Filii Dei is one of the Pope’s titles. Whether it is on his mitre (hat) or not is of no consequence.
As we are told to “count the number...the number of a man,” we should choose a language in which letters have numerical value. As the Beast is the ROMAN Catholic Papacy, and as the Pope’s title is in Latin (ROMAN), and as Roman, unlike English, gives certain letters numerical value, it is obvious that we should use Latin, or ROMAN numerals.
It is significant that the first 6 letters with numerical values total 666
I=1 V=5 X=10 L=50 C=100 D=500 = 666.
When the letters of the Pope’s Roman title are taken as Roman numerals they total 666. See 666 study.
666 is also associated with SUN WORSHIP which helps confirm that 666 is associated with the Papacy because the Papacy openly claims to have changed the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first day of the week, SUNDAY, the day named after the so-called SUN GOD. See on Dan 7:25.

THE TWO HORNED BEAST - THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
The first beast of Rev 13 is the most powerful end-time RELIGIOUS power in the world. The second beast of Rev 13 is the most powerful end-time POLITICAL power in the world. THE LAST TWO END-TIME SUPERPOWERS ARE HERE.
The founders of the United States were very much oppossed to the Papal principle of uniting the Church and THE State. They knew too well the intolerance and persecution which had endured for centuries in Europe. It took well over a hundred years of Catholic immigration, political manouvering and media brainwashing, before the American people were willing to elect their first Roman Catholic president in the 1960s. Even then they only did so after he had publicly repudiated the Catholic principle of uniting Church with State. JFK was later shot dead in the back of his limousine.
It was not until 1984 that the US placed its first “ambassador to the Vatican” and since then they have worked more and more closely. The most graphic accomplishment of the Roman~American connection was seen in the fall of the Berlin Wall and the break up of Soviet Communism The last two end-time superpowers are here.
KEY VERSES IN IDENTIFYING THE TWO HORNED BEAST
Concerning the first beast of Revelation 13 (Papal Rome) the Bible says it persecuted God's people, made war against them and overcame them - See Daniel 7:21, 25 & Rev 13:7. This persecution was to continue for 42 months or 1260yrs while this beast held power over them - Daniel 7:25 & Rev 13:5. The beast then receives a deadly wound in Rev 13:5. It is logical to conclude that at the end of this period of 1260 years the beast would receive a deadly wound. As it led others into captivity so itself goes into captivity and as it killed by the sword so it is killed by the sword:
"He that leadeth into captivity shall go into captivity: he that killeth with the sword must be killed with the sword. Here is the patience and the faith of the saints." Rev 13:10 The point being that as this first beast, the Papacy, goes into captivity, John sees another beast rise up out of the earth Rev 13:11.
The timeline for the demise of the Papal beast in Rev 13:10 and for the rise of the second beast of Rev 13:11 is exactly as prophesied and points unmistakably to the United States of America as that second beast.
Wesley had this to say: “He is not yet come, though he can not be far off for he is to appear at the end of the forty two months of the first beast.” New Testament with explanatory notes, by John Wesley.
TIMELINE FOR THE DEADLY WOUND OF THE PAPAL BEAST - 1798
The papacy had led many of God’s people into prisons & dungeons during the Dark Ages] shall go into captivity [The visible head of the papacy was led into captivity by the French armies in 1798.
The papal state power was dead and the grave, into which the dead enter, is called the prison house (See Isa 14:17-19). The papacy was captive in death]: he that killeth with the sword [The papacy had martyred millions in the Dark Ages] must be killed with the sword [Having used the sword to slay the saints, the sword (military power) of France slew the church of Rome in 1798 (cf. v 3). “They that take the sword shall perish with the sword.” (Matt 26:52). This verse also indicates that Christ’s followers are not kill (John 18:36).
"[The French general] Berthier entered Rome on 10th February 1798, and proclaimed a Republic. The aged Pontiff refused to violate his oath by recognizing it, and was hurried from prison to prison in Fran2ce. Broken with fatigue and sorrows, he died...[in] August 1799, in the French fortress of Valence...No wonder that half Europe thought... that with the Pope the papacy was dead." Lectures on the History of Religions, vol 3, lec. 24, p1. J. Rickaby or The Modern papacy, J. Rickaby (A Catholic Jesuit) p 9.
“The papacy was extinct: not a vestige of its existence remained; and among all the Roman Catholic powers not a finger was stirred in its defence. The eternal city had no longer prince or pontiff; its bishop was dying a captive in foreign lands; and the decree was announced that no successor would be allowed in his place.” Rome: From the Fall of the Western Empire, George Trevor, p440.
cf. Dan 7:25; 11:33-35
“In 1798 General Berthier made his entrance into Rome, abolished the papal government, and established a secular one.” -Encyclopedia Britannica 1941 edition].
THE RISE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
As the first beast, Papal Rome, went into captivity in 1798, there is seen rising another beast from the earth in the 1700s.
ONLY ONE NATION, THE U.S.A, FITS THE TIMELINE.
It is no surprise that the most powerful nation on earth figures in Bible prophecy. This now dominant nation, emerged relatively peacefully to independent power in the late 1700s, in the great wilderness land discovered by Columbus and known as The New World. It has since grown to super power status and will play a significant and terrible role in the world’s last days.

verse 11 And I beheld another beast
[THE RISE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
As beasts represent kingdoms or nations. (cf. Dan 7:23; Dan 8:21-22) “another” beast means another nation distinct and seperate from the preceeding papal beast.
.
THE TIMING OF ITS RISE - ABOUT 1798
As this beast is spoken of as distinct from “the first beast before him” (v 12) it must rise after the “first.”
It is not the first beast healed of its deadly wound because this two-horned beast exists seperate from and in the sight of the first beast. (v 14). It is “another” beast.
It is, however, from the time of its rise a power contemporary with the beast whose deadly wound was healed
One obvious clue as to the time this nation arose (v 11) is that it is spoken of in connection with the wounding of the first beast, the papal power, in 1798 described in the previous verse (v10).
At that very time the U.S.A. was rising:
U.S. Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.
U.S. Constitution went into effect, March 1, 1789.
The great Methodist, John Wesley, taught that the first beast of Rev 13 was the Papacy and in his 1774 notes concerning this two horned beast he wrote:
“Another beast, but he is not yet come, though he cannot be far off, for he is to appear at the end of the forty two months of the first beast [i.e. 1798] and he had two horns like a lamb. A mild innocent appearance.” John Wesley, The New Testament With Explanatory Notes, (1774), p427
THE TWO HORNED BEAST - THE U.S.A. IN BIBLE PROPHECY
The following verses describe the two horned beast. The identifying points given in Scripture are as follows:
1. “A beast...” (v11) Another nation. Beasts represent kingdoms & nations (Dan 7:23; 8:20-21.
2. Was rising to power around 1798 when the first beast was led “into captivity” and “killed (v 10-11)
3. Comes up “out of the earth” (v 11). The previous beast, and those of Daniel 7, arose from the waters of the sea (Rev 13:1; Daniel 7). As waters represent MANY PEOPLE “peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” Rev 17:15, the earth from which this two horned beast arose must therefore, BY CONTRAST represent a place of FEW people.
4. Initially has “lamb-like” horns (v11) Christ-like principles. Christ is the Lamb.
5. Is of the Protestant faith (v 11). The dragon of Rev 12 was primarily pagan, the first beast of chapter 13 was primarily papal, this beast must represent some other form of religion which had lamb-like, i.e. Christlike qualities. These qualities are seen in true protestantism
6. “causes the earth...to worship...” (v12) Ultimately posseses world-wide influence and involves itself in religion.
7. “He had power...” (v15)
8. Ultimately has huge economic power and is able to control all trade, “that no man might buy or sell” (v16).
9. It is a Republic. Its horns are uncrowned in contrast to the horns on the first beast indicating that it is not a kingdom. It acknowledges that the people hold the power by “saying to them that dwell on the earth that THEY should make...” This is a nation in which the people hold the power - a Republic (v14).
ONLY THE U.S.A. FITS ALL THE CLUES
It is no surprise that the most powerful nation on earth figures in Bible prophecy. This now dominant nation, emerged relatively peacefully to independent power in the late 1700s, in the great wilderness land discovered by Columbus and known as The New World. It has since grown to super power status and will play a significant and terrible part in the world’s last days.
“One nation, and only one, meets the specifications of this prophecy; it points unmistakably to the United States of America.” GC 440
“...the United States is the power represented by the beast with lamblike horns...” GC 579.
As the dragon of Revelation 12 primarily represents PaganISM and as the first beast of Rev 13 primarily represents PapalISM
it is reasonable to expect that this two horned lamb-like beast, is another distinct “ISM,” The U.S.A. heads ProtestantISM]
Coming Up
[Gr. anabinon. In Matt 13:7 anabaino is used of growing plants. This nation did not rise by military conquest, as did most of the nations of Europe. No other nation was overthrown to make way for the rise of the U.S.A. It rose through peaceful migration, Christ-like principles and the development of its natural resources.
“Behold the mighty regions over which, in peaceful conquest - ‘victoria sine clade,’ [victory without strife] - they have borne the banners of the cross.” Edward Everett, “Oration at Plymouth, Dec. 22, 1824,” in Oration & Speeches, p42.
A WESTWARD TREND
There appears to be a westward trend in the location of the world empires which figure in Bible prophecy. From Babylon & Persia the next nation, Greece, lay to the west. From Greece the next nation, Rome, lay further to the west. We may therefore expect that the nation represented by the two horned beast lay to the west of the Roman Empire. West of Europe across the Atlantic Ocean arose the U.S.A..
The centre of influence in Christianity also appears to have followed this westward course . From Israel the centre of Christianity moved west to Europe. This suggests that west of Europe, in the territory of the two horned beast, the truths of the gospel would most clearly be brought out. Indeed, the U.S.A. has taken up the work of spreading the gospel and it exerts the greatest Christian influence of any nation today. However the moral greatness of the nation has passed and the influence of the U.S.A. today is not entirely wholesome]
out of the earth
THE U.S.A. AROSE FROM A LAND OF FEW PEOPLE.
The previous beast, and those of Daniel 7, arose from the waters of the sea (Rev 13:1; Dan 7). As waters represent “ peoples, and multitudes, and nations, and tongues.” Rev 17:15 (a place of MANY PEOPLE), the earth from which this two horned beast arose must therefore, BY CONTRAST represent a place of FEW people.
At the time the settlers arrived an informed estimate places the number of American Indians roaming the three million square miles which later became the U.S.A. at a million or so. Just one Indian for every three square miles. See Samuel Eliot Morison, The Oxford History of the American People, p15, and Merwyn S. Garbarino, “Indian, American,” World Book Encyclopedia, 1973, 10:127, 138n.
A prominent writer, describing the rise of the U.S., speaks of “the mystery of her coming forth from vacancy,” and says: “Like a silent seed we grew into empire.” The New World Compared With The Old, G.A. Townsend, p462
“The United States...a wonderful empire which was...emerging...amid the silence of the earth, daily adding to its power and pride.” Uriah Smith, Daniel & the Revelation, (1944 ed.), p578.
This lamb-like nation, instead of overthrowing other powers in great wars grew in a sparsely populated wilderness, in a land discovered, not conquered.
The “toughest battle...ever fought on New England soil” between settlers and Indians involved only 3000 Indians and lasted no longer than three hours.” Morison, American People, p110, referring to the Great Swamp Fight of Nov. 19, 1675, with the Narrangansetts.
The other great kingdoms that ruled the world are represented in symbolic prophecy as agressive beasts, arising as “the four winds of the heaven strove upon the great sea.” (Dan 7:2) These winds represent the strife, war and revolution by which kingdoms come to power (Jer 25:32, 33). In contrast, the lamb-like beast arose differently - the USA, the last superpower arose "quietly"]
and he had two horns like a lamb
REPUBLICANISM & PROTESTANTISM
Horns commonly represent kings/kingdoms, or governements (Daniel 7:24). The two horns on the Ram (8:21) represented the union of two powers; Media & Persia, in one nation.
The papal religion was also represented by a “little horn” even before it uprooted three of the European kingdoms (See Daniel 7) and received civil power. Thus horns may refer to civil and/or religious powers.
Goodrich says that the Papacy did not receive civil power until 755: "As a reward to the Roman pontiff, Pepin, in the year 755, conferred on Stephen, the successor of Zachary, several rich provinces in Italy, by which gift he was established as a temporal monarch." Thus ecclesiastical as well as civil power may be represented by a horn.
Q. Should not the civil power be represented by the beast, rather than by a horn on the beast?
A. The civil power of Grecia was represented by the great horn of the goat in Daniel 8; and when that civil power was broken, the beast still continued to exist; and in the place of that one civil government arose four other horns or governments.
When the dominion of the different beasts of Daniel.7 was taken away, their lives were prolonged for a season and a time. That is, the nations still lived, though their dominion was destroyed. Hence, we understand that the beasts denote the nations which constitute the different kingdoms, and the horns of the beast denote the civil and religious powers of the nations.
In contrast with the first beast the horns of the two horned beast are uncrowned suggesting that they are not monarchial or kingly. cf. v 14. This is more significant when it is considered that at the time the U.S.A. arose all other nations had monarchial governments.
The lamb, a symbol of Christ, in Revelation 5:6 has “seven horns.” Seven denotes completeness. Horns denote power (Lam 2:3; Deut 33:7). Christ was wounded in seven places: Two hands; Two feet; Brow; Back & Side. The power of Christ is His love and His love was shown graphically in His suffering & sacrifice for us:
“And his brightness was as the light; he had HORNS [margin: or, bright beams out of his side] coming out of his hand: and there [was] the hiding of his power.” Habbakuk 3:4]
CHRIST-LIKE PRINCIPLES
The qualifying words “Like a lamb” evidently denotes the character of this nations civil & religious powers.
Lamblike denotes:
1. Youthfullness
Youthfulness is implied because a lamb’s horns have just begun to grow.
Pagan Rome, when introduced in prophecy was already 700 years old and was represented as “a dreadful beast strong excedingly.”
2. Mild, even Chritlike, nature
The lamb is mentioned 27 times in Revelation and 26 refer to Christ. That this beast’s horns are called lamb-like indicates that, according to the chronology of v 10, about the year 1798, this nation possessed, lamb-like, Christ-like, governing principles.
No civil power could ever compare with Republicanism in its lamb-like character. The grand principle recognized by this form of power is thus expressed: ‘All men are born free and equal, and endowed with certain inalienable rights, as life, liberty, and the pusuit of happiness.’ Hence all have a right to participate in making the laws, and in designating who shall execute them. Was ever there a development of civil power so lamb-like before? And what, in religious matters, can be compared with Protestantism? Its leading sentiment is the distict recognition of the right of private judgment in matters of conscience. ‘The Bible is the only religion of Protestants.’ Was there ever in the religious world anything to equal this in its lamb-like professions? Such we consider the meaning of the two horns like a lamb.” J.N. Andrews, Revelation, p83.”
The Christ-like seperation of church & State safeguards Religious liberty
Luke 20:25 “And he said unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which be Caesar's, and unto God the things which be God's.”
Christ was a spiritual leader and as such he refused to dabble in civil matters. When asked to settle a dispute He said, “...who made me a judge or a divider over you?” Luke 12:14.
God has given Ceasar, i.e., the civil state, the power to rule in civil matters alone and to legislate how individuals in society can legally relate to each other; i.e. the civil power is to police the enforceable principles on the second table of the Decalogue (10 commandments):
Honouring Father & Mother; Harming & murdering others; Adultery, Theft, and Lying, purjury etc.
God has not given Ceasar anything to do with the issues between men and God as described on the first table of stone.
To this lamb-like governing principle those who fled Europe from royal oppression also added Republicanism, i.e. government by the people, for the people rather than a dictatorship or a monarchy. These two principles were enshrined in the constitution of the U.S.A.
REPUBLICANISM & PROTESTANTISM - TWO FUNDAMENTAL FOUNDING PRINCIPLES OF THE U.S.A.
“America came into existence as it did in part because of religious differences. Although economic incentives inspired the discovery of the New World, spiritual ones shaped it; many colonists left Europe to ESCAPE PERSECUTION for their beliefs, which grew out of the Protestant Reformation that swept the continent beginning in the early sixteenth century.” Douglas Brinkley, History of the United States, American Heritage ©1998, Viking publishers, p 27
“Among the Christian exiles who first fled to America and sought asylum from ROYAL OPPRESSION and PRIESTLY INTOLERANCE were many who determined to establish a government upon the broad foundation of CIVIL and RELIGIOUS LIBERTY. Their views found place in the Declaration of Independence, which sets forth the great truth that ‘all men are created equal’ and endowed with the inalienable right to ‘life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.’ And the Constitution guarantees to the people the right of self-government., providing that representatives elected by the popular vote shall enact and administer the laws. Freedom of religious faith was also granted, every man being permitted to worship God according to the dictates of his conscience. REPUBLICANISM [a kingless democracy] and PROTESTANTISM [a popeless, dictatorless religion] became the fundamental principles of the nation. These principles are the secret of its power and prosperity.” GC 441 (emphasis added); 7BC 975
A YOUNG NATION BUT THE WORLD’S OLDEST DEMOCRACY
This was a remarkable achievement. Never before had this been accomplished in history. It was a marvellous advance in the civilization of man. How important for all to realize the significance of this and to safeguard religious and civil liberty. Many thought that such a system would be chaotic but history shows that God blessed America and it grew and prospered upon these fertile principles.
Throughout history only a few individuals & groups had understood the necessity of religious liberty:
Christ, the Great leader of religious liberty, would not yield His conscience to another and died upholding the freedom of worship.
When commanded to stop preaching Christ and the disciples did not. Had they yielded to the priesthood of their day Christianity would never have advanced.
“It is a fundamental human right, a privilege of nature, that every man should worship God according to his own convictions; one man’s religion neither harms nor helps another man. It is assuredly no part of religion to compel religion - to which free will and not force should lead us.”
Tertullian, Ad Scapula, chap. 2, Library of Antenicene Fathers. (Second Century)
“It is religion alone in which freedom has placed its dwelling. For it is a matter which is voluntary above all others, nor can necessity be imposed upon any, so as to worship that which he does not wish to worship.” Lactantius, Epitome of the Divine Institutes, chap. 54, Library of the Antenicene Fathers. (Third Century)
The Anabaptists who were sorely persecuted by their fellow men at the time of the Reformation.
(See W.L. Emmerson, The Reformation & the Advent Movement, p11-67)
William of Orange, called “William the Silent” (1533-1584), stood out a century before his time. He was a lover and upholder of religious liberty.
Encyclopaedia. Britannica, (19ll ed.), Vol. 27, p672-674
Some German Protestant princes stood for religious liberty. Among them was Phillip Hess, known as “Phillip the Magnanimous.”
W.L. Emmerson, The Reformation & the Advent Movement, p84-86.
There were the English Baptists who in 1612 formed themselves into a religious body and were the first church to set out a declaration of faith that embodied religious liberty. “This is the first known expresssion of absolute liberty of conscience in any profession of faith. It was from their little dingy meeting house...that there flashed out first in England, the absolute doctrine of religious liberty.” Encyclopaedia. Britannica, (19ll ed.), Vol. 3, p372
After the English Baptists came Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) who was also a great advocate of religious liberty and hated the persecution of people because of their religious persuasion. (Cromwell did however refuse religious liberty to Anglicans and Catholics because they used the liberty to undermine the State and rekindle religious persecution. See Enc. Britannica, (1911 ed.), Vol. 7, p492-495).
Later came Roger Williams, a friend of Cromwell, Milton, and other Purtitans. He founded Rhode Island Province, “upon the basis of complete religious toleration...a shelter for persons distressed for conscience.” He was baptized by Anabaptists and formed the first Baptist church in America. “He was uniformly tolerant and he occupies a high place...for complete liberty of conscinece. He was the first and foremost exponent in America of the theory of absolute freedom of the individual in matters of religion...Rhode Island was the first colony consistently to apply this principle in practice.” Encyclopaedia Britannica, (1911 ed.), Vol. 28, p682-683.
The U.S.A. was the first nation to legislate the seperation of church & state, to have a church without a pope and a state without a king. The timing of the rise of the U.S.A. in a territory thousands of miles from Europe was providential and it is recognized that these two vital principles would never have been included in the Constitution had the U.S.A. been founded at a different period in history. (See C.W. Eliot, Harvard University, American Contributions to Civilization, p18, also Beard, Rise of American Civilization, p30).
“In that land the great experiment was to be made, by civilized man, of the attempt to construct society on a new basis; and it was there, for the first time, that theories hitherto unknown or deemed impracticable, were to exhibit a spectacle for which the word had not been prepared by the history of the past.” De Torcqueville, Democracy in America, Vol. 1, p25.
There were three main countries from which the refugees had come to America: Britain, Germany and Holland. Each of these countries had experience extreme periods of persecution and this firmed their resolve to make into law, Civil & Religious Liberty.
Divine prophecy had foretold that the earth would help the woman (the church, see Revelation 12) and many scholars are convinced that the U.S.A fulfilled this prediction. Indeed the wilderness of America became a refuge for the persecuted and oppressed
These principles civil & religious liberty, are contrary to the published principles of Catholicism, therefore this nation would be non-catholic.
Time has confirmed this interpretation which has been consistently taught by reformers, protestants and more recently, Seventh-day Adventists since the 1840’s.
THE FRAGILITY OF RELIGIOUS LIBERTY
An eminent American jurist justly observed that in a government of the people “there is no safety except in an enlightened public opinion, based on individual intelligence.” Laws against any religion gaining civil power are safe only so long as the people are intelligent & enlightened. Liberty is only safe as long as the people recognize that if they pass ANY religious legislation they forfeit their own religious liberty. With a dulled society, ignorant of the past the genius of religious liberty could be lost. This is just the kind of world we live in and we are soon to return to the horrors of the past],
THE BEAST WITH LAMB-LIKE HORNS SPEAKS AS A DRAGON
and he spake as a dragon
[OPPRESSIVE LAWS: The mouth of a nation is its government, and the speaking of a nation must be the laws it proclaims. But this speaking is as a Dragon - the purposes of the evil one will be promoted by this beast. "The ‘speaking’ of the nation is the action of its legislative and judicial authorities.” These laws will be of a religious nature, forcing men "...to worship the first beast" v 12. The first beast in this chapter represents papal Rome. Ultimately these oppressive intolerant 'dragon-like' laws will involve a death penalty v 15.
Over 100 years ago the church of Rome planned the conquest of the U.S.A, the stronghold of Protestantism. In 1890, Roman Catholic Archbishop Ireland of Baltimore wrote: “Catholics of the U.S.A. are called ...to make America Catholic...Catholic truth will travel on the wings of American influence and with it encircle the universe.” Archbishop Ireland, Recorded in The Pope and the New Era, p22-223.
“Our purpose is to make America Catholic.” The Mission Movement in America, Catholic University, Washington D.C., June, 1909.
In 1910 the Roman Catholic publication, The Missionary wrote: “It seems to me that the main support of Protestantism comes from the U.S.A. and England...If we put an end to this effort in the U.S.A. and England, by making these nations predominantly Catholic, we will have removed the chief obstacle to the conversion of the world to the true faith...a vigorous effort in the United States at this time, will reduce the opposition to an insignificant condition...In the course of another century the [Protestant] sects will be a study for the historian and antiquarian, along with the Arian.” The Missionary, (R.C.) Washington D.C., May 1910.
Many years ago Catholic action was established. It focused on America in particular, not in an antagonistic way but in a quiet, wisely planned way. Dr. E. Boyd Barret, for many years a Jesuit, made the following statement in 1935: “In theory, Catholic action is the work and service of lay Catholics in the cause of religion, under the guidance of the bishops. in practice it is the Catholic group fighting their way to control America....
The effort, the fight, may be drawn out. It may last for five or ten years. Even if it it lasts for twenty - what is twenty years in the life of Rome? The fight must be fought to a finish - opposition must be worn down, if it cannot be swept away. Rome’s immortal destiny hangs on the outcome. that destiny overshadows the land....And in the fight, as she has ever fought when battles were most desperate in the past, Rome will use steel and gold and silver lies. Rome will stoop to conquer.” Dr. E. Boyd Barret, Rome Stoops to Conquer, p15, 266-267.
These plans to conquer America include:
1. Catholicize School textbooks - How much is commonly known of the principles of Protestantism and Catholicism, of the Dark Ages, of the Reformation? How many even know that thir religious and democratic liberties cost the lives of millions?
2. Revise the books of reference
3. Muzzle or control the media - Rome is presented in a good light but her principles are unchanged.
4. Control the public libraries - How many books remain describing the horrors of the Dark Ages. How many present Rome in a favourable and totally harmless organization?
5. Censor books that are not friendly to Roman Catholicism
In 1928 Senator Thomas E. Watson declared before the U.S. Senate: “In the public schools the Catholics have stealthily introduced textbooks written by Jesuits; and your children are being taught that the Roman Church was misunderstood in the past; that its doctrines are not fatal to humanity and gospel religion; that its record is not saturated with the blood of innocent millions, murdered by Papal persecutors, and that there never was such a monstrosity as the alleged sale of papal pardons of sins...Educate youth in this way, and the consequences are logical.”
Senator Thomas E. Watson, Roman Catholics in America Falsifying History & Poisoning the Minds of Protestant School Children, (1928), p5
In the land where the principles of Roman Catholicism were loathed Rome has almost finished her work:
President George W. Bush recently said, “The best way to honor Pope John Paul II, truly one of the great men, is to take his teaching seriously; is to listen to his words and PUT HIS WORDS AND TEACHINGS INTO ACTION HERE IN AMERICA. This is a challenge we must accept. But you know something about our country? With the right focus and the right leadership, it’s a challenge this nation will accept.” President Bush, Washington, March 22, 2001
verse 12* And he exerciseth all the power [Civil & religious] of the first beast [papalism] before him, and causeth the earth and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast [ENFORCED WORSHIP The “earth” here cannot represent few people as it did in verse 11 for that interpretation would make the verse senseless for it would read, “causeth the earth (few people) and them which dwell therein to worship the first beast.”!
Rather the earth here refer to the earth itself. In what way can the earth be made to worship the beast? (Exo 23:10-11). By forcing men to perform an act of homage, i.e. receiving the mark of the beast, which honour the papacy above God], whose deadly wound was healed [The papacy’s wound of 1798 will completely heal. The power to persecute will return. See on v 3] The first beast exercised religious and political power. This prophecy foretells that the US government will command some observance which will be an act of worshipping the first beast - the Papacy. In order for this to happen the USA will have to unite Church & State. This would be the formation of “an image” of the beast, i.e. an image of the Papacy - a union of Church & State.
...and causeth the earth...to worship the first beast...
How can the earth be made to worship? In the Old Testament the land was to rest or keep a Sabbath to the Lord every seven years. Here the two horned beast makes the earth to rest as an act of worship, not of God but of the beast. This suggests that the beast will enforce a counterfeit Sabbath. “For as long as she [the land] lay desolate she kept Sabbath.” 2Chron 36:21. The Mark of the Beast therefore has to do with worship.
The USA will be instrumental in trampling upon civil and religious liberty. All nations will follow her in implementing the worship of the first beast. See Mark of the Beast study
